Ethiopian Orphan Health Foundation

Twenty years in Gondar.

Founded as an undergraduate. Active to this day. The Ethiopian Orphan Health Foundation has shaped every chapter of Rishi’s career.

Origins

The Ethiopian Orphan Health Foundation began in 2005, when Rishi made his first trip to Gondar, Ethiopia as a Johns Hopkins undergraduate. What began as community-based fieldwork became, by 2008, a registered nonprofit providing health care and education to 91 orphans near Gondar.

Work

The foundation runs three intertwined programs: community-based health visits, school sponsorships, and nutritional support. Every program is designed in partnership with local caregivers, teachers, and clinicians who know what children in Gondar actually need.

Today

Nearly twenty years on, the foundation continues to operate . deeply intertwined with Rishi’s research at the University of Gondar Hospital NICU and the long-standing relationships he has built with families in the region.

“Throughout college and during my first gap year before medical school, I founded the Ethiopian Orphan Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provided community-based health care and education to 91 orphans near Gondar, Ethiopia.” Rishi Mediratta
